The Buckley Writing Program is excited to announce new middle school writing workshops.  The series of writing workshops (6th, 7th, and 8th grade) is designed to enhance the classroom instruction and writing capabilities of middle school students.  The workshop topics have been developed to complement current classroom instruction and to allow students more time, flexibility and feedback in developing their writing skills.

Throughout the two day journey, I met with students, faculty members, constituents from various departments, the Provost and President of the college.  I was impressed with the eloquence with which the college spoke of their focus on a liberal arts education and their cross departmental multifaceted education.  Students are clearly engaged in the schools academic focus and are committed to the service Gettysburg is known for.

But, the good news is that the students Buckley has worked with are getting in to the colleges of their choice.  Without naming names of schools, we are so very glad that admission readers ‘heard’ the stories of applicants and I’m so very glad that the human element is alive and well in the reading process.  As a long time undergraduate admission reader for the University of California at Berkeley, I understand the daunting task of admission reading and hold in high regard the job that each reader holds.

And, as admission decision and the statistics come through, we will share it.  Difficult?  Yes. Students who should have been admitted? Yes.  But, I’m a firm believer that everythign does happen for a reason and we, as eductors and counselors are here to buoy the students through the process of decisions.

Some numbers to date:
Harvard – 5.9 percent acceptance
Cornell – 16.2 percent accepannce (down from 18 percent last year)
Johns Hopkins  – 17.7 percent acceptance (down from 18.3)
U. of Pennyslvania  – (12.3 percentance acceptance (down from 12.4)

How to make a decision?  Follow these 5 Tips:
1.  Refer back to your initial college research
Use the research you did for deciding where to apply for the same process for where you should attend

2.  Analyze the finances
This is an area of college decision making that too often is left until the end of the i making process.  Review award offers,understand the financial package and make an informed long term decision for your undergraduate education

3.  Reassess your educational purpose and goal(s)
What are the reasons you’re furthering your education?  Expectations for an education may be fact, but fully understand your internal drive for furthering your education.

4.  Connect with current students
Students are the best gauge for uncovering the core of a university campus.  Connect with current students and find out what they love about their campus.

5.  Attend an orientation or informational session
Listen to the admission staff as they visit your area and talk about the academic programs offered at their school.  You applied to each college for a particular reason.  As you listen to the admission representatives speak, take account of what they value by what they emphasize.

Remember that the college decision should be based on academic programs, emotional connectedness and social relevance.
